# Apollo program The Apollo program was the United States human spaceflight program run by NASA between 1961 and 1972. It was conceived in 1960 during the Eisenhower administration and dedicated to President Kennedy's 1961 goal of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth before the end of the decade. Apollo used the Saturn V rocket, launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and achieved its goal with Apollo 11 in July 1969. Six missions landed astronauts on the Moon; the last, Apollo 17, flew in December 1972.
